The bridge expresses itself aspiration of two coast of Venice to illusory connection, emphasizing their division by the channel. Two coasts aspire to each other, but they never unite. Only the human will can unite coast, and this process is naked in the peak of reunion.

The open human stream is dissolved in city, uniting it. Suspension bridge is dissolved in the river. The city and the river mix up in each other on peak of the bridge.
